At Women in AI we’d like to inspire others by featuring female role models that are making a difference in AI. We aim to empower women who are working in AI by highlighting their success stories. This way we hope to inspire other women and girls to get into STEM-related fields. In our series ‘In the Spotlight’ we shine a light on an expert in the field and today we’d like you to meet Emma Gilpin.
Author: Ingrid van Heuven van Staereling.
Emma is an experience designer from South Africa who has a love for all things play. She was previously working at Media.Monks in Hilversum where she specialized in projects that incorporate gamification to engage with people on a new level. She has been responsible for researching new AI tools and applying them to the company’s UX workflow in order to make designer’s lives easier and more productive.
Along with interface designer colleague, Victorine Snyders, they created an in-depth plAIbook to teach other designers about AI. “We conceptualized and produced many AI concept projects to demonstrate the practical application of these tools.” -she tells us. She also worked on the UX design for an internal AI imaging tool that utilized the stable diffusion API. “The idea was to be able to train the tool on specific client work and tailor it to brand guidelines. I focused on creating an interface that demystifies the process and is incredibly user friendly for all employees and client teams.”
“By researching new AI tools and adapting them to our workflows, I could introduce colleagues to the power of AI to not only make our work lives more enjoyable, but also give us more time for creativity.”
While she was at Media.Monks she got the opportunity to work on some of the largest brand experiences in the world. She explains how AI can help support creative teams by assisting them with the day-to-day tasks. “By researching new AI tools and adapting them to our workflows, I could introduce colleagues to the power of AI to not only make our work lives more enjoyable, but also give us more time for creativity.” Her story emphasises how AI can be a powerful ally for creative teams. It can help enhance their capabilities, streamlining workflows and open up new avenues for innovation. By integrating AI into their processes, creative teams can focus more on their core strengths: creativity and innovation.
Currently she is interested in the possibilities that AI holds to expand our imaginations and shorten the time between idea and design. “I’m really interested at the moment in creating custom GPTs that are tailored to helping me explore concepts and expand my creative thinking.”
Emma is a firm believer in the positives that using AI can bring.”As long as we learn about it and harness its power for good, we will remain its master!” With a lot of curiosity, some good adaptability and a little bit of humor she thinks everyone is able to work in a creative way with AI. “Keep up to date with the latest tools and play around with them!”
