Last month, Google hosted AI Connect, an event that brought AI experts, enthusiasts, and academics together to explore the impact and future of artificial intelligence. Representing Women in AI (WAI), we joined to deepen our understanding of AI’s evolution, particularly within the Dutch landscape, and to advocate for a more inclusive, diverse AI industry.
Here’s a look back at the key moments, insights, and powerful discussions from the event.

AI Connect lived up to its name, bringing together minds across AI, technology, and social advocacy. Hosted by the charismatic Irene Rompa, the event kicked off with AI’s transformative journey from conception to present developments. Martijn Bertisen, the VP of Google Benelux, opened up the stage with a recap on artificial intelligence and the Dutch as a nation.
Moving from its early days as an academic curiosity to its current role as a powerful force reshaping industries, this overview allowed a better understanding of the discussions of the day. Overall, the event wasn’t just about tech updates – it was a lively conversation about the roots of AI, where it’s headed, and how we can steer it to benefit everyone. In the Netherlands, artificial intelligence-driven technology is at the forefront of several sectors, including logistics, healthcare, and sustainability. Google’s presentations offered a fascinating view of how AI-powered innovations are tackling challenges worldwide, from supporting predictive healthcare to streamlining trade logistics.
The stage then welcomed fellow academic, tech, and business voices within the field to tell their part of this grand story we are writing globally. Among these names were Zoubin Ghahramani, Constantijn van Oranje, Elise de Reus, Bob van Luijt, and Nicola Ebmeyer, all sharing their experience within the Dutch field of AI and beyond. Specializing in various fields within the world of AI, these individuals unpacked their experience as leaders, business owners, and AI researchers.
A recurring theme was Google’s vision of making AI accessible and helpful for everyone, a vision that goes beyond just technological advancements. From their early days, they have been working on ethical AI development that puts people first. This ensures that their tools are not only useful but also respectful of privacy and ethical boundaries.
One area where this vision shines is unprecedented advancements in healthcare, with more accurate diagnostics, preventative prediction, and complete cell synthesis. Google highlighted initiatives in the medical field such as AlphaFold and Gemini, which we will do a deeper dive into in an upcoming article! Overall, these efforts demonstrated Google’s commitment to building AI that doesn’t just power technological advancement but also truly makes a global difference.
It comes as no surprise that at AI Connect, WAI was front and center to gain knowledge on the direction AI is headed. We had a clear mission to not only better understand the future possibilities that await, but also how to better amplify the voices of women in the field of AI.
WAI is a global nonprofit working to close the gender gap in AI by encouraging female representation in both technical and leadership roles. Our goal? To make AI an industry that values inclusivity and embraces diverse perspectives.
Our time at the event reaffirmed why diversity in AI is so crucial, now more than ever. Google underscored the importance of building AI with a range of perspectives to reduce biases and improve its relevance and fairness. During discussions, we shared some of the challenges that women face in entering and excelling in tech fields like AI. The conversation extended into solutions—mentorship opportunities, access to education, and hiring practices that foster a more diverse talent pool. At the very core of our organization, this is our mission and ethos in navigating the world of AI today.
It was interesting to note that there was full acknowledgment of the crucial role played by women from multiple speakers across the stage, both male and female. The importance of women within the spheres of tech, AI and beyond cannot be understated. Bringing in a balance of better employee vetting and retention, as well as refreshing outlooks on real-world problems that need solutions, the list goes on with more female inclusion.
The Netherlands, with its progressive stance on equality and innovation, has fertile ground for cultivating a diverse AI ecosystem. At AI Connect, we delved into actionable solutions to make the Dutch tech industry more inclusive. A diverse AI workforce isn’t just a matter of fairness – it’s an engine for creativity and innovation. When teams include people from varied backgrounds, they bring unique insights that help to address potential biases and create solutions that resonate with more people.
AI Connect wrapped up the day with a conversation about AI’s potential to reshape the global trajectory of progress guided by technological advancements. Here, a better understanding of the future opportunities was rounded up.
A common misconception that still exists is that AI is overly complicated and exotic, or just for people within tech. The reality is that there is only a handful of people that understand it and therefore only a handful of people will shape the future of it. As a means of combating this, we should aim to understand that fear causes disengagement. If people are talking about AI as a weapon, it further deters people from getting involved – and evidently enough, we need more people getting involved, not less.
As we are currently sitting with the untapped potential of AI, we are essentially unraveling one of the most important inventions of all time. Through collaborative efforts, we can aim at creating a better ecosystem in which AI can flourish more and more. For Dutch businesses and individuals, there is a calling for more diversity as AI needs the involvement of everyone. More specifically within the Dutch context, as the technology becomes more ingrained in fields like agriculture, finance, and public health, the Netherlands is emerging as a European hub for fair AI development.
Google, through its various AI initiatives, echoed its commitment to developing AI in alignment with societal values, making sure its advancements serve the greater good. This vision aligns closely with the Women in AI mission to ensure that AI progresses in a way that benefits everyone, regardless of gender, background, or expertise.
For us at Women in AI, AI Connect was a pivotal moment in the latter part of this year, further stating our dedication to advancing female voices and diversity in the industry. It was an inspiring day packed with insights and meaningful conversations, and we walked away more motivated than ever to push for a fairer, more inclusive future of AI.
As touched on multiple times throughout the event, women seem better at certain aspects of these advancements, emphasizing the need for better opportunities for females making a difference. This further highlights the need for a space to be created and upheld for everyone as we aim to maintain the attraction of new talent within the world of AI.
The AI Connect event was a reminder of AI’s incredible potential and the shared responsibility to shape it thoughtfully. With committed organizations like Google and advocacy groups like WAI, there’s real hope for an AI future that is accessible, helpful, and fair to all.
At Women in AI, we’re on a mission to empower women and minorities to lead, innovate, and excel in AI and data fields. Through responsible and ethical AI, we can transform not only the technology but also the communities it serves.
