At Women in AI we’d like to inspire others by featuring female role models that are making a difference in AI. We aim to empower women who are working in AI by highlighting their success stories. This way we hope to inspire other women and girls to get into STEM-related fields. In our series ‘In the Spotlight’ we shine a light on an expert in the field and today we’d like you to meet Jet Smits.

Women in AI - Jet Smit in the Spotlight

Who is Jet Smits?

Jet is a highly developed, data-driven consultant who approaches organizational challenges with a creative outlook, offering original solutions. She is an inspirator and motivator that encourages others to look beyond the surface. With her companies InIn and Dutch AI, she has built an impressive track record in the public sector. Jet is a visionary person who looks into the future to provide effective data science & AI solutions for societal challenges faced by governments. Her personality reflects that of a natural leader with a focus on the human factor. She is described as a pleasant individual who, along with her team, guides organizations with advice and oversees operational tasks at all levels of the organization.

The Ethical Compass Drives it All

With Jet’s company ‘InIn – Wij begrijpen data’ (translated from Dutch: ‘InIn – we understand data’) and Dutch AI she and her team are dedicated to helping organizations, especially those within the Public Sector that have societal challenges. They do this by offering services in the Social Domain and other government projects like forest management, nitrogen, residences, and employment. As a business owner in Data Science & AI Jet is always looking ahead. The AI business is a dynamic one. “And so is my team!” -she explains enthusiastically. “At InIn, we invest time in our personnel so they can further educate themselves, enabling them to freely share their ideas, thoughts, and challenges.” At InIn they are dedicated in helping each other get the most out of their work together. “This is the way to make an impact in the daily work of our customers and for citizens.”

Jet started InIn to change the consultancy business and make an impact with AI. “Building a better world is why I get up in the morning.” -she explains. The result of each project matters, and that is what she stands for. Her dedication to making a difference is strong and began way before she decided to start her own company. “Long before the start of my company InIn, I gained experience in Public Services and that’s where I want to make an impact.” What she does now is bring skilled workers and AI knowledge into the Public Services. “The world of AI is very young, so there is a whole world to win, in which the outcome is still unknown. But one thing that is known, is that we will develop AI to make an impact on Social Tasks.” She and her team have a big ethical compass, and that’s why she is convinced they are the perfect company to bring AI into the Public Services

“The world of AI is very young, so there is a whole world to win, in which the outcome is still unknown.”

Contributing to the Right Things

Jet acknowledges that the widespread adoption of AI applications is still in an early phase. “But with our expertise, we contribute to these developments.” And they are selective in what they do. They feel like they have to be. ”We do not contribute to all pilots; only the ones with societal goals, making a positive impact on people’s lives, have our support.” They have a strong motivation to do the right thing. “We feel that our efforts have to contribute to a better availability of public services, offering and using the best information and intelligence, and improving the work/life balance for employees & citizens.”

Jet goes by the mission ‘If your ideas don’t scare you, you’re not thinking big enough.’ “You need leadership, confidence and creativity to get into the AI market.” -she tells us. In order to be able to keep up with the dynamic world of AI, she believes it is all about working together with a great team of young, smart data scientists and machine learning engineers. It seems that with her team at InIn, she found her way to do just that.
