Today, in our ‘In the Spotlight’ series, we are thrilled to introduce Flor de Guadalupe Ortiz Gomez, a trailblazing research scientist whose work is redefining the future of satellite communications and AI.
Author: Bianca Dybala.
Flor’s journey as a researcher in AI and telecommunications embodies innovation, dedication, and a drive to create meaningful impact. From her academic background to her groundbreaking work in satellite technology, Flor has made impressive strides in integrating artificial intelligence into space systems. Her achievements inspire women everywhere to see the boundless possibilities that a career in AI can offer.
Flor de Guadalupe Ortiz Gomez holds a Ph.D. in Telecommunications Engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and is now a research scientist at the University of Luxembourg’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability, and Trust (SnT).
In her role, she leads projects that push the boundaries of what’s possible in satellite communications. Flor specializes in the application of AI and neuromorphic computing to satellite systems, focusing on areas like resource management, energy efficiency, and real-time adaptability.
Her work is at the cutting edge of non-terrestrial networks (NTNs), a critical area as the world moves toward a future where connectivity from space will play a crucial role in global infrastructure. “By integrating AI with satellite communications, we’re building systems that can operate autonomously and more efficiently,” Flor explains. She goes on to further elaborate that “this not only optimizes resource use but also enhances the reliability of communication networks around the world.”
Flor’s research is not only advancing satellite technology but also addressing pressing global challenges. Her AI-powered solutions optimize energy use in satellite operations, reducing the carbon footprint of space missions – a significant achievement in an era where sustainability is paramount. Through the power of AI, Flor is enabling satellites to autonomously manage operations, which in turn conserves resources and minimizes environmental impact.
The implications of her work extend far beyond just telecommunications, spanning further and deeper within the industry. By enhancing the efficiency and resilience of satellite systems, Flor’s research has potential benefits for industries including logistics, environmental monitoring, and disaster management. Her technology could help track and respond to environmental changes, provide connectivity in disaster-prone areas, and deliver crucial data to remote regions, ultimately strengthening global infrastructure and resilience.
"By integrating AI with satellite communications, we’re creating autonomous, efficient systems that optimize resources and enhance network reliability worldwide”
Flor’s passion for AI transcends the confines of her research lab, being part of her personal time too. As the creator of the popular YouTube channel Atecnea, she shares her knowledge with a global audience, demystifying AI concepts and making advanced technology accessible to viewers worldwide. Through her channel, Flor empowers others to understand and engage with AI, sparking interest in the field and inspiring future generations of STEM innovators.
For Flor, education and mentorship are key to building a more inclusive tech community. Her channel not only showcases her expertise but also reflects her commitment to encouraging women and girls to pursue careers in AI and other STEM fields. “I want to show young women that AI isn’t just for a select few,” she says, “It’s a field where we can all make a difference and contribute to shaping the future”.
